WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Jim Costa (CA-20) today (Wednesday, Nov. 9)denounced the Amtrak Board firing of David Gunn, the train systems highlysuccessful president as "outrageous." Costa described Gunn's dismissalas, "a sad day for Amtrak."

In testimony before the Railroads Subcommittee of the House TransportationCommittee, Costa said, "In reality the Administration wants to emasculate andthen kill Amtrak, putting another unfunded mandate on the back of any statethat decides to continue an inter-city rail system."

Speaking in support of HR 798, "Methamphetamine RemediationAct of 2005," Costa brought attention to the epidemic sweeping the San Joaquin Valley. "We in California's CentralValley have been fighting rampant meth abuse, production and cleanup for over 20 years."

"These funds," Costa said, "help to compensate states andlocalities for the costs incurred for incarcerating undocumented criminalaliens."
