We all continue to grapple with the racial divisions plaguing our country. As the House Judiciary Committee works on legislation to pursue police reform, I continue to reach out to constituents and community leaders to listen to their concerns as we explore ways to engage on this issue. Here are some highlights on other work I've been involved in recently:
Good News -- Reopening our national parks
In accordance with federal, state, and local public health authorities, Yosemite, Kings and Sequoia National Parks have opened. Each park has its own guidelines, so please review before you go.
Yosemite requires a day-use permit. The park is is issuing 1700 vehicle passes each day that will be validated at the park entrance. Make a reservation here.
Remember to stay safe and continue to practice social distancing. Most importantly, enjoy the summer weather at America's national parks!
Hometown Hero - Alex Delgado
After 21 years, KSEE24's Alex Delgado is retiring. She's been a fixture in our homes and a role model for so many. We're sad to see her go, but we'll always be grateful for her diligent reporting. Congratulations Alex, and thank you for all you've done for our Valley!
Expanding medical education -- more good news
Congratulations to Fresno State on securing accreditation for its nursing programs! The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us of how important nurses are. They've been on the front lines, providing essential health care, and yes, in some cases, holding the hands of dying patients when families could not visit. They’ve shown up, day after day, to care for the sick, putting their own health and the health of their families at risk. We need these dedicated workers in our community and we must do what we can to build a stronger healthcare team in the Valley. The future of Fresno State’s program is essential to addressing the shortage of medical care professionals in the Valley. I will continue to work to improve access to healthcare in this community by working to expand medical education. It's one of my highest priorities.
Moving forward with high-speed rail
On June 4th, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee introduced the INVEST Act, a bill to invest $494 billion in improving America’s transportation infrastructure, including high-speed rail development. The new PRIME Grant program adopts key rail provisions I introduced earlier this year in the High Speed Rail Corridor Development Act This legislation will fund the completion of high-speed rail in California, which has already created over 4,000 jobs across the state. .
Dia de Portugal
Dia de Portugal is a perfect time to celebrate Portugal's rich history and heritage. Portuguese Americans have made significant contributions throughout our Valley and our nation. As co-Chair of the Portuguese American Caucus and a third-generation Portuguese immigrant, I want to wish you all a feliz Dia de Portugal!
