Costa Statement on the 1-Year Anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

February 24, 2023

WASHINGTON – Congressman Jim Costa (CA-21), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement marking the 1-year anniversary of Russia’s unlawful invasion of Ukraine.

“A year ago today, Vladimir Putin launched an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine — a war that has led to nothing but destruction and human rights atrocities. Last year, when I visited Ukraine, I saw the damage firsthand: homes destroyed, mass graves, and families torn apart. It's horrible. But I also saw the great determination of the Ukrainian people as they fight to protect their sovereignty.

President Biden and Congress, along with our NATO allies, have provided defense, economic, and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. Putin thought Ukraine would fall. He was wrong. The Western world is united as one because freedom and democracy are worth fighting for.

It is critical for Ukraine to prevail in this war. The United States will continue its unwavering support for the people and democratically elected government of Ukraine. This is the test of our time, and we must rise to meet it. The future of democracy depends on it."
