Costa Issues Statement on Supreme Court Decision on Birthright Citizenship

June 30, 2026

WASHINGTON — Congressman Jim Costa (CA-21) released the following statement following the Supreme Court's decision regarding the Administration's effort to end birthright citizenship:

"The 14th Amendment is clear: anyone born in the United States is a citizen of the United States. That has been settled law for 128 years, and it should never have been called into question.

"This administration's attacks on immigrants has upended the lives of millions of families, including many here in our San Joaquin Valley. This attempt to strip citizenship from American-born children based on their parents' immigration status continues these attacks, expanding them to target American citizens.

"Today's decision is an important reminder that no president can rewrite the Constitution with the stroke of a pen. But our work is far from over. Congress must still come together to fix our broken immigration system by strengthening border security, modernizing our legal immigration system, and advancing lasting, bipartisan solutions for families, workers, and our economy."
