EXCLUSIVE: Costa Leads Democratic Push to Block Trump’s Tariffs, Citing Risk to U.S. Housing Market
WASHINGTON – Congressman Jim Costa (CA-21) is leading more than 40 House Democrats in a new push urging President Donald Trump to abandon his proposal to impose sweeping tariffs on construction material imports from Canada and Mexico, warning the move could further destabilize the U.S. housing market and stall economic growth.
In a letter obtained exclusively by The Guardian, Costa and his colleagues caution that the proposed 25% tariffs—currently delayed until March 4—would sharply raise prices for essential building materials like lumber and cement. The lawmakers argue that such a move, coupled with existing duties on Chinese goods, could increase construction costs by as much as $4 billion, worsening the housing affordability crisis nationwide.
“Given the severe housing shortage, compounded by rising construction costs, persistent supply chain disruptions, and an estimated shortfall of six million homes, these looming tariffs risk further exacerbating the crisis,” the lawmakers wrote.
The lawmakers further emphasized their readiness to work with the White House on an alternative path: “Immediate action will not only shield American families from escalating housing costs but also demonstrate leadership in steering our nation toward sustainable economic growth.”
