Costa Votes to Lower Costs at the Gas Pump

May 19, 2022

WASHINGTON – Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16) released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 7688 - Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act, which would stop price gouging and lower costs for consumers at the gas pump.

"Valley residents are paying some of the highest prices at the gas pump, and they need relief now," said Costa. "We need to cut costs and protect consumers by becoming energy independent. Enough is enough! This legislation will help lower costs for consumers, so they don't have to choose between filling up their tanks or buying groceries."

The Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act would give the President the authority to issue an energy emergency declaration that would prohibit the increase in gasoline and home energy fuel prices in an excessive or exploitative manner. It would also strengthen the Federal Trade Commission's authority to oversee the energy market and penalize bad actors manipulating the market, improving transparency and fair competition. Any monetary penalties from market manipulators would go toward the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program and Weatherization Assistance Program to help Americans who are struggling with high energy prices.
