Costa Statement on Letter Calling for Sanctions Against Azerbaijan for Human Rights Abuses

October 23, 2020

(FRESNO, CA) - Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16) issued the following statement on a letter sent to Secretary Pompeo calling for the implementation of sanctions against Azerbaijani officials responsible for ongoing human rights abuses taking place in the Republic of Artsakh:

"It's important that the U.S. stand against human rights violations," Rep. Jim Costa said. "Azerbaijan must be held accountable for its aggressive actions against the Armenian people. Implementing sanctions on key officials is an important first step in showing there are consequences to these gross violations of internationally recognized human rights. I will continue to stand up for the Armenian people."

Congressman Costa took further action and supported the Congressional Armenian Caucus's Artsakh Right to Self-Determination Resolution, which clearly and accurately reflects the realities of the on-going situation in Artsakh and upholds the people in Artsakh's right to self-determination. Congressman Costa continues to advocate for and stand with the Armenian community in the United States and abroad.
