Costa Statement on Budget Compromise

April 8, 2011

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Jim Costa (D-CA) released the following statement regarding the recently announced budget compromise.

"From the outset of this debate, I have encouraged both parties to come together and reach a bipartisan consensus on a budget that keeps the government running, reduces our deficit, and reflects the values we hold as Americans. As we saw during these recent discussions, partisan bickering and bitter political attacks don't solve problems. The only way to find solutions is by sitting down in good faith, holding true to our shared values, and finding common ground.

"As thankful as I am that we averted a devastating government shutdown this evening, I remain concerned about the challenges on the horizon. For the past three months we have debated a small slice of the federal budget – just 15 percent. With our national debt close to 14 trillion dollars, arguing about millions and billions just won't cut it. We need an adult conversation about our fiscal future with everything on the table. We simply cannot afford to kick this can down the road a minute longer. Let's get to work."
