Costa Statement on Averting a Government Shutdown
(WASHINGTON) – Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16) released the following statement after the House passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) to keep the government funded through December 11, 2020 and avoid a government shutdown.
“This bipartisan compromise comes at an important time and ensures we avoid another government shutdown,” said Costa. “Funding the government, especially during a pandemic, is the responsible thing to do. While this deal extends lifelines for families and provides funding for critical programs that have helped Americans absorb the shocks of the pandemic, we need additional relief. The American people are depending on us. It’s past time for both sides of the aisle to come together and find a solution.”
The bill includes funding for important programs that benefit residents of the San Joaquin Valley, including:
- Replenishing the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) to help protect farmers and maintain sufficient food supply;
- Extending the pandemic EBT program to ensure families have access to nutritious, affordable food despite the closure of schools and childcare centers;
- Extending waivers for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the National School Lunch Program, and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Woman, Infants, and Children (WIC) until September 2021;
- Extending USDA Rural Development water and wastewater loans that will continue to benefit communities like Dos Palos secure access to a clean water supply.
