Costa Statement on 155th Anniversary of “Juneteenth”
(FRESNO, CA) – Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16) released the following statement in recognition of the 155th Anniversary of “Juneteenth” commemorating the end of slavery in the United States:
“Today we honor those who built our country by continuing the fight for a more just tomorrow,” said Costa. “155 years after the end of slavery, Black Americans still face systemic racism and oppression. We cannot stop until every American has equal opportunities to succeed".
Congressman Costa is an original cosponsor of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, to make Juneteenth the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Day in 1983.
