Costa Joins First Lady & Governor Newsom at Event Honoring Cesar Chavez, Work of Farm Laborers

March 31, 2021

(DELANO) On a day in which the nation celebrates the life and work of Cesar Chavez, Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16) joined First Lady of the United States Jill Biden and Governor Gavin Newsom for a National Day of Action event in Delano to honor the former labor leader and reflect on his work for the Latino Community:

"Today we honor the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez, who advocated for fair wages and fair treatment of the men and women who work tirelessly to feed our communities," said Costa. "A visionary leader, Chavez was the voice for a generation of workers who wanted nothing more than to be treated with dignity and respect. Today and every day, we must reaffirm our commitment that the ideals of our nation, that all men are created equal, apply to every man, woman and child who call America their home.

It was an honor to have the First Lady visit our Valley. We discussed the hopes and aspirations of the American people to successfully work through this health crisis. I look forward to working with the Administration to get our country back on track."

Following the event at The Forty Acres, headquarters of United Farmworkers of America – cofounded by Chavez – Rep. Costa, Dr. Biden and Gov. Newsom also visited a COVID-19 vaccination center focused on inoculating valley farm laborers. Farm workers and Latino communities of the Central Valley have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and Rep. Costa has fought for their protection throughout the pandemic.
