October 3, 2011

Fresno, Calif. - Congressman Jim Costa (D-Calif.) announced that the Fresno Unified School District has received nearly $400,000 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Education to expand counseling programs at four high-need elementary schools. The grant will enable the school district to expand and enhance the Safe and Civil Schools program, a school-wide and classroom-based program, to improve the safety and social behavior of students.

"Investing in education is our nation's best ‘jobs' program. This funding will significantly boost the ability of the Fresno Unified School District to provide our students a well-rounded education that will enable them to compete in the global economy. This grant is a win for our children and an investment in their future," Costa said.

Superintendent Michael Hanson added, "This critical grant will help support the ongoing programs that ensure our students are learning in a safe and secure environment. We appreciate the Department of Education for providing this grant and Congressman Costa for his many years of support for the school district and the students we serve."

The funding was provided to the Fresno Unified School District through the Department of Education's Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Program.
