Congressman Costa Issues Statement on House Passage of Equality Act
Washington, D.C. - Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16) released the following statement on the House passage of HR-5 The Equality Act:
It’s as simple as this: no American should be treated as less than equal in the eyes of the law. Members of the LGBTQ community deserve the same protections as everyone else. With #TheEqualityAct, we’re one step closer to putting an end to this discrimination once and for all.”
The Equality Act ensures LGBTQ Americans are guaranteed the full protections of federal civil rights laws. Currently, fifty percent of the national LGBTQ community live in states where, though they have the right to marry, they have no explicit non-discrimination protections in other areas of daily life. This historic legislation extends anti-discrimination protections to LGBTQ Americans with regard to employment, education, access to credit, jury service, federal funding, housing and public accommodations.
