(Madera, California) – Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16) released the following statement about Caltrans and the Madera County Transportation Commission breaking ground today on the Highway 99 widening project from Avenue 12 to Avenue 17 in the City of Madera:

“Widening Highway 99 has been a top priority for me,” said Costa. “This long-awaited project will reduce congestion and create safer roads for drivers throughout the Valley. For over two years, I’ve worked with Mayor Medellin, the City Council, and the Madera County Board of Supervisors to secure various funding streams for this important work. As someone who frequently drives on Highway 99, I’m looking forward to the completion of this project.”

This stretch of Highway 99 is used by more than 66,000 motorists and 14,000 truckers per day. In addition to creating 11.7 new lane miles, work will also be done to revitalize 23.4 lane miles, and upgrade the Almond Avenue on-ramp. Construction on this $86.1 million project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2020.
