CONGRESSMAN COSTA ANNOUNCES GRANTS RECEIVED IN THE 20TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

Fresno, CA - Today, Congressman JimCosta (CA-20) announced that Community Action Partnership Bakersfield of Kernhas been selected to receive funding, totaling near $100,000, under the CarolM. White Physical Education Program from the United States Department ofEducation.

"Physicaleducation is an important aspect of our educational system and these funds willallow schools to provide adequate activities for students to learn abouthealthy ways of living," Congressman Costa said.

CommunityAction Partnership Bakersfield of Kern will receive $99,998 that will aid inhelping students to understand, improve or maintain their physicalwell-being. These funds will alsoprovide opportunities for professional development for teachers who arerequired to stay updated on current research and issues with regard to physicaleducation.

TheCarol M. White Physical Education Program supports local education agencies andcommunity-based organizations in their efforts to initiate, expand, or enhancephysical education programs for students in kindergarten through 12thgrade. The funds coming from thisprogram will help awardees to provide teacher training, develop physicaleducation and nutrition education curricula, conduct fitness assessments andpurchase equipment.

"Educatingyoung children about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle is advantageous tocreating an overall health conscious community," Costa concluded.
