Costa Slams Administration's Attack on Hungry Americans

December 4, 2019

(WASHINGTON) Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16) released the following statement in response to the Trump Administration's decision to eliminate eligibility of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program (SNAP) for certain able-bodied adults with no dependents:

"This decision will harm hungry Americans, including thousands of residents in the San Joaquin Valley, said Costa. I fought to maintain SNAP eligibility for those who need it most in negotiations for the 2018 Farm Bill, which the President agreed to and signed into law. Now the President is going back on his word. It's wrong and another heartless example of this Administration's willingness to go around Congress to harm the most vulnerable in our society."

Congress overwhelmingly rejected proposed changes to SNAP eligibility during negotiations for the 2018 Farm Bill, and this override of the law by the Trump Administration without Congressional approval, is unlawful. This new rule will strip nearly 1 million hungry Americans from this federal benefit.
