Social Security
In August of 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, codifying access to lifesaving resources that impact over 70 million people every year. This program is significant to Valley seniors because it’s more than just a retirement program, it provides them life and disability insurance protections.
In California’s 21st Congressional District, there are over 87,699 Social Security recipients. A lot has changed about our country in 87 years, but the reliability of Social Security has not. It’s time to give them the tools they need to not only survive but thrive.
Congressman Costa is committed to protecting and strengthening Social Security - ensuring that the program will fulfill its promises to America's seniors while improving the long-term stability of Social Security and protecting it from any attempts to privatize it.
Legislation:
Costa is proud to be an original cosponsor of the following legislation, which would strengthen Social Security:
Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust, which provides an increase in benefits, ends the 5-month waiting period to receive disability benefits, provides caregiver credits, and improves the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA).
Social Security Fairness Act would repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO), two provisions of the Social Security Act, that have unfairly reduced and prevented social security benefits from millions of Americans who have dedicated their lives to public service.
