Weekly Newsletter 5.28.2019

Dear Friend,

After a busy week in Washington, I was back in the district talking to people about the work I'm doing and listening to their concerns. Here are some highlights from the week of May 27th:

Honoring the fallen

At San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, Fresno's Memorial Gardens, and Liberty Veterans Cemetery, I participated in ceremonies to honor the sacrifice of those who have given everything in defense of our nation. These fallen heroes are the reason we enjoy the freedoms of being Americans. I'm working hard to ensure that veterans have the support they need to succeed when they return home. That's why I supported legislation last week like H.R.1812 - Vet Center Eligibility Expansion ActH.R.1200 - Veterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2019, and H.R.2045 - Veterans’ Education, Transition, and Opportunity Prioritization Plan Act of 2019.

Securing Valley water

Chairman of the House Committee on Natural Resources, Rep. Raul Grijalva, came to the district for a firsthand look at the Central Valley water issues. Congressman TJ Cox and I showed him around various locations like Del Bosque farms to emphasize the rising need for safe, clean water for Valley communities and farmers. I will continue working with the Chairman and Rep. Cox to secure a reliable water supply for farmers, ranchers, and dairymen and women who put food on America's dinner table every night.

Keeping children safe

At Chukchansi Park, I participated in Valley Children's Hospital May Day Summer Safety Fair, which hosted first responders, law enforcement, and Valley Children's staff. I got to learn about all the great work Valley Children's is doing to keep the children of our community safe during the summer months.

Improving equal protections for women

I sat down with local female leaders to hear how we can better address their concerns and advance women's rights. I also filled them in on the work I've been doing in Congress, including cosponsoring H.R.7- the Paycheck Fairness ActH.R.1585 - Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019, and working with my fellow co-chairs and members of the Victims' Rights Caucus to ensure women enjoy the same protections as men.
