Weekly Newsletter 5.15.2019
This week, I'm back in Washington, where the House is working on legislation to increase access to healthcare and ensure equal protections for every American. Here are some highlights from the week of May 13th:
Lowering Prescription Drug Costs
Today, I voted to pass H.R.987 - the MORE Health Education Act which lowers the cost of prescription drugs, cracks down on junk insurance plans, and lowers the cost of health coverage. This bill builds on last weeks effort to protect coverage for people with preexisting conditions. I am committed to delivering affordable healthcare for every American and ensuring the people of the Valley have the best access possible. This legislation helps us get closer to that goal.
Also, the house passed H.R. 2157 - the Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2019, which provides relief for communities dealing with natural disasters. The bill provides California with more than $3 billion in recovery and prevention assistance in the aftermath of wildfires that have devastated whole communities. The legislation highlights the need to do more to manage forests to prevent deadly and destructive wildfires.

Central Valley Honor Flight #19
It was an honor to greet Vietnam War veterans in Fresno as they prepared to take off on the 19th Central Valley Honor Flight on Monday. This group, which includes about 68 Vietnam War veterans, spent the week in Washington visiting landmarks, including the Vietnam War Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Smithsonian Museum of American History. It is a small token of appreciation for those who have sacrificed so much in service of our country. Each veteran also received a special 50th Anniversary Vietnam War Veteran Memorial Coin. Hear more about the work I'm doing on behalf of our veterans.

Congressional Art Competition
Thalia Garcia - Congressional Art Competition Winner
We are proud to announce this year's winners of the Congressional Art Competition. Thalia Garcia from Madera High School was the overall winner of the competition. Her piece "Head in the Clouds" will hang for the next year in the halls of Congress. The runners up, Diana Presas of El Capitan High School in Merced and Anna Titterington from Edison High in Fresno, will hang their pieces in my district offices. Anna's work "Fantine" will be displayed in my Fresno office and Diana's "Imagine" will hang in my Merced office. The artistic talent all across our Valley never ceases to amaze me!
